Talk to Your Doctor
If you think you're experiencing symptoms of Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS), see your doctor. Symptoms of RLS such as tingling sensations in the legs, along with an urge to move your legs, can be similar to symptoms of other disorders, so only your doctor can diagnose RLS. There are no specific tests to diagnose RLS. Diagnosis of RLS is based on:
- Your symptoms
- Your medical history
- A physical exam
Medical tests may be done to rule out other conditions associated with similar symptoms of RLS.
Primary RLS is a chronic condition that can change over time, so your doctor may want to evaluate you from time to time.

What You Can Do About Your Symptoms
To get a diagnosis of your symptoms, provide as much information as possible. Take the following information with you to your appointment.- Use your Symptom Checklist — complete and print out this checklist of symptoms of RLS, and take it with you to your doctor's appointment. This is a good way to begin the conversation with your doctor
- Make a list of any over-the-counter medicines, herbal and vitamin supplements, and prescription medicines you're currently taking
- Know the history of this condition in your family. Do any other members of your family experience tingling sensations in the leg or similar symptoms?
