What Causes Restless Legs Syndrome?

The Dopamine System May Be Involved

While the exact cause of primary Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is unknown, doctors believe that RLS may be related to dopamine (DOPE - uh - mean), a chemical that carries the signals between the nerve cells that help to control body movement. When the dopamine system does not function properly, it may upset the normal communication of these signals, which may cause the uncomfortable sensations and pain you may feel.

The idea that the brain responds differently to dopamine in RLS is supported by the fact that patients respond to medications like Requip. Requip acts like dopamine and helps relieve the uncontrollable leg sensations and urge to move caused by moderate-to-severe primary RLS.

Other Factors

Family History

About 60% of people with RLS say someone in their family has the same symptoms.

Age

RLS is a lifelong condition, and symptoms can become more frequent and more intense as the person gets older. (Requip is only indicated for adult patients; safety and effectiveness in children have not been established.)

Gender

Women are slightly more likely than men to develop RLS.
